In context of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin Peek&Cloppenburg KG organizes a talent award for young designers, called Designer for Tomorrow. Once a year in summer this event is organized for giving the young and ambitious designers an objective to be creative and provide them a steppingstone for their future career.
Allowed to participate in this competition are young men and women, who have finished their studies or apprenticeship/training in the field of Fashion Design within the last 24 months and who do not yet have their own collection on the market. The winner has the opportunity to work on his or her own collection in collaboration with Peek&Cloppenburg and also gets his own fashion show at the Fashion Week Berlin in January.
Last year’s winner, Parsival Cserer now has the honor to present his collection at January 21st in the Fashion Week’s tent at Bebelplatz in front of a professional audience and it is really probable that he will start his career very soon. He was elected among eight finalists who presented their small collections in the competition happening last year in the time of the Berlin Fashion Week 2010 in July. Watch the video of the show in this link.
I think this award is a really good opportunity for every graduated designer, because they get professional support in creating their own collection and in other important aspects of a designer’s business such as marketing or the organization of their own shop or showroom. For instance the winners of the last years have made their individual path in the business world: Sam Frenzel (winner July 2009) recently became the new creative director at Roeckl and parts of his collection presented at the Fashion Week 2010 were sold by Peek&Cloppenburg in limited editions. Julia Knüpfer (winner January 2009) is currently creating her own fashion label and Joel S. Horwitz (winner January 2009) is a designer for the “Originals” Lifestyle Department at Adidas.
As you can see they all gone their ways and I personally would be really happy to see the current collection “KNI+++API” of Parsival Cserer at the Fashion Week! Have a look!
I really like huge companies supporting young people with a certain talent, so this is a great thing. But why actually is Mercedes interested in fashion? What is the marketing idea behind that? Is it just spreading a Mercedes lifestyle among freaky or exclusive people of the fashion business? Great post =)
This is a great opportunity for young designers to be seen by the world and get their career started. I can imagine how hard it is to stick out in the fashion world and especially among young designers. I would like to hear more about opportunities for young designers like this one!
